Discovering Ruam Mit Thai Lao Cuisine: A Culinary Crossroads in St. Paul
Nestled in the heart of downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, at the easily accessible address of 367 Wabasha St N, lies a culinary gem that bridges two vibrant Southeast Asian traditions: Ruam Mit Thai Lao Cuisine. This establishment is more than just a restaurant; it is a warm invitation to explore the rich, complex, and often intertwined flavors of Thai and Lao cooking. In a city known for its diverse gastronomic landscape, Ruam Mit stands out by offering an authentic taste of regional specialties that often remain elusive in mainstream dining venues. The name itself, "Ruam Mit," suggests a harmonious gathering or coming together, perfectly encapsulating the restaurant's mission to unite the best elements of both culinary heritages under one roof.
For those unfamiliar with the nuances separating Thai and Lao food, Ruam Mit provides an educational and deeply satisfying journey. While both cuisines share foundational ingredients like lemongrass, galangal, and fish sauce, Lao cuisine often leans into bolder, more herbaceous profiles, frequently featuring sticky rice (khao niao) as the staple carbohydrate and utilizing fermented fish sauce (padaek) to achieve a distinctive depth of flavor. Thai cuisine, while equally complex, showcases a broader spectrum of regional variations, from the fiery curries of the South to the milder, aromatic stir-fries of the Central plains. Ruam Mit Thai Lao Cuisine masterfully navigates this spectrum, ensuring that patrons can experience the subtle yet significant differences that define each nation's gastronomic identity.
The atmosphere at Ruam Mit is intentionally welcoming, designed to feel like stepping into a familiar, bustling eatery found in Vientiane or Bangkok. It’s a place where the aroma of simmering broths and freshly pounded spices greets you at the door, setting the stage for an authentic dining experience. The commitment to traditional preparation methods is evident in every dish served, prioritizing fresh ingredients and time-honored techniques over shortcuts. This dedication to authenticity is what draws both seasoned explorers of Southeast Asian food and curious newcomers alike to their tables on Wabasha Street.
Key Highlights of the Ruam Mit Experience
Authentic Culinary Fusion: Ruam Mit excels in presenting dishes that honor both Thai and Lao culinary traditions distinctly. Patrons can easily compare and contrast the smoky depth of a Lao laap (minced meat salad) with the balanced sweetness and sourness of a classic Thai green curry, all within the same menu. This dual focus provides a comprehensive overview of the region's flavor profiles.
Emphasis on Fresh Herbs and Aromatics: The vibrancy of the food stems directly from the generous use of fresh, fragrant herbs. Ingredients are sourced to ensure that the bright citrus notes of kaffir lime, the earthy warmth of turmeric, and the sharp bite of fresh chilies are present and perfectly balanced in every bite, showcasing the complexity inherent in these cuisines.
A True Neighborhood Anchor: Situated centrally in St. Paul, Ruam Mit serves as a vital community hub. It offers a reliable, high-quality dining option that reflects the cultural diversity of the Twin Cities. The consistent quality and friendly service have cemented its reputation as a local favorite, appreciated for its genuine hospitality.
Mastery of Traditional Staples: Beyond the main courses, the restaurant pays meticulous attention to the staples. Whether it is the perfectly steamed sticky rice essential for Lao dishes or the variety of noodles used in Thai preparations, the foundation of the meal is treated with the same respect as the more elaborate entrees, ensuring a complete and satisfying textural experience.
Exploring the menu at Ruam Mit Thai Lao Cuisine is an adventure in texture, heat, and aroma. From savory soups that warm the soul to vibrant salads that awaken the palate, the offerings cater to a wide range of preferences while maintaining a steadfast commitment to regional accuracy. The location at 367 Wabasha St N places it perfectly for a pre-theater meal, a satisfying lunch break, or a flavorful dinner outing in downtown St. Paul.
In conclusion, Ruam Mit Thai Lao Cuisine represents a significant and delicious contribution to the culinary landscape of Minnesota. It successfully bridges geographical and cultural distances, bringing the nuanced, bold, and aromatic flavors of Thailand and Laos directly to the community. For anyone seeking an authentic, flavorful, and genuinely welcoming dining experience that celebrates the rich tapestry of Southeast Asian cooking, a visit to this Wabasha Street institution is highly recommended. It is a place where every dish tells a story of tradition, community, and the beautiful harmony found where two great culinary worlds meet.

I wasn’t even hungry when I came here but I rediscovered hunger when the food got to my table. Hands down best Pad Thai I’ve ever had. Also had the Bahn Xeo, which was unlike anything I’ve had before and was absolutely delicious. Warm and friendly service, and the food came out in a good time frame. However, spice level 4 was not very spicy at all.

Wanted to love this place. It was a miss. Food was mediocre at best, definitely nothing to rave about. The major issue service was absolutely horrendous. Sat there for an hour and a half and no one even looked at us or checked on us. We … More

Absolutely phenomenal Thai cuisine—fresh, vibrant, and bursting with flavor in every bite! I ordered #39 and #8, and both were unforgettable in their own way.
#39 was a masterpiece—perfectly balanced spices, rich aromatics, and fresh herbs that danced together in harmony. The textures were spot on: tender, crisp, and comforting all at once. It felt like a dish made with heart and precision.
#8 surprised me with its depth—bright, zesty notes with just the right kick of heat. Every bite had layers: sweet, savory, spicy, and that signature Thai tang that makes you instantly crave more. You could taste how fresh the ingredients were—nothing dull or overdone, just bold, clean flavors done right.
The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and welcoming, and the service was just as impressive as the food—friendly, attentive, and clearly proud of what they serve.
If you’re looking for authentic Thai food that sings with freshness and soul, this is the spot. I’ll definitely be back to explore the rest of the menu!

Ruam Mit Thai + Lao Cuisine is a great find in a convenient, central location in Saint Paul — easy to get to and perfect for a casual lunch or dinner out. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a clean, comfortable setup that makes you feel at ease right away.
Service was impressively fast and efficient, and the staff was polite and attentive without being overbearing. The food? Absolutely delicious. Flavors were bold and well-balanced — everything we tried was tasty and clearly made with care. Portion sizes were solid, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality.
Overall, a great spot that delivers on both flavor and experience. Definitely worth coming back for more.

Stopped in for lunch, definitely recommend if you’re looking for fresh Thai in a friendly, quiet atmosphere! Our server was kind and attentive. I ordered the Bung Bo, and my party shared spring rolls and wontons. The spring rolls were some of the best we’ve had. Bung Bo I ordered spicy and it was just right. We also enjoyed a side of pineapple fried rice. Pots of tea come with free refills, the Thai green tea was lovely!

If looking for parking, local lots would be your best bet, as street parking is very limited. Expect a 1-3 block walk.

Came up from WI to MN for the Hmong New Year. My wife wanted to try this Thai restaurant so we stopped by on 11/30/24 around 8:30PM. It was slightly busy but our group of 4 got seated immediately still. The waitress was quick to take our … More

I’ve missed Ruam Mit Thai ever since they closed their last location, so I was thrilled to see them reopen! The new space is beautiful, and the food is just as amazing as I remembered so fresh, flavorful, authentic, and never disappointing. The service was excellent too. Our waiter took the time to chat with me about the new menu and even remembered an old favorite I used to order. My boyfriend is a tough critic, and even he was very impressed. It’s a bit on the spendy side, but absolutely worth it for the quality, flavor, and experience. I can’t wait to go back!

Appetizers; Curry puffs & spring rolls! Really large portions for what you get.
Mocktail options!!
Great cocktail menu as well for anyone who drinks.
The noodles & chicken laab was exceptional. If you can’t handle spice then a level 3 is a solid level. Those who prefer much spicer go to a 5 & ask for extra spices on the side.
The service was wonderful. We were checked on several times, taken well care of, and were properly explained items on the menu that we had questions about! I really recommend this spot for a quick meal (the service was very quick so we didn’t wait too long).

Parking
Tow parking garages directly across the street of the restaurant. The one closest would be a valet parting spot & it’s solely $15. Then there’s the parking garage across from that which can be hourly rates. Probably will spend around the same amount on either. If you find street parking it’s all metered. There’s directly next to the restaurant and across the street closest to the Walgreens. Just plan in advance as it can be a busy spot to park in!

Wheelchair accessibility
Wheelchair accessible for sure! Plus patio seating if need be. All on street level so shouldn’t be too difficult to sit at. You will need assistance with the doors if you are a wheelchair bound person!

I'll give this place a 3.5.
We tried the Thai tea, Oua Sikhai Gai(chicken patties), Pad See Ew and Banh Xeo.
The Thai tea was good, but on the sweeter side which is fine I drank it all.
The Oua Sikhai Gai were also on the sweeter side but it came with jeow piet(spicy dipping sauce) it definitely needed this. I wish we would have ordered sticky rice with it, it would have paired well. Overall with the jeow the dish was delicious! My favorite!
The Pad See Ew was made with thin rice noodles, you can sub for wide noodles for $2 more, our waitress did not mention this so we were surprised that it came with the thin noodles. Also this dish seemed very dry, not as saucy as we have had at other restaurants. Typically every time we order this dish it comes with the wide noodles so we were disappointed. Overall the taste was good, we might try this again and get the wide noodles and compare.
Lastly we tried the Banh Xeo, this was also not the typical banh Xeo we have had at other restaurants. The batter was so much thicker it was kinda like and omelet instead of a crepe, and you do have to pay extra for the meat, pork or shrimp not both. And the fish sauce dipping sauce was too sweet for my liking but again we did eat everything. The flavors were okay just slightly off.
Also tried the banana egg roll and ice cream. This was okay! I wish the banana was just fried and not in an eg g roll. Tried the toasted coconut ice cream and this was delicious.
Overall the food was okay and service was okay, they were a little slower probably because it was fathers day. But it was very friendly service. We would try this place again.

So we've made a quick stop in Minnesota and crave some Authentic Thai Food. Did a little research and found this spot with many awards.
The place was nice and cozy
The atmosphere is very nice
The server was good and attentive.
Now onto the food:
Nam khao 3 out of 5
-Presentation is nice
-The portion is a little for the price
Overall taste is ok.
Chicken Pad Thai:
-Presentation looks sloppy
-The portion is a little
-1 out of 5
Overall taste isn't that good. To me, it's missing that nice sourness taste from the vinegar and tamarind taste, so it's just a typical fried noodle dish not really a Pad Thai dish at all.
Usually, when I see a lemon wedge instead of a lime it's going to be off.
Beef Curry:
-This dish stole the show for me.
Nice bold creamy coconut flavour not too sweet. This by far is one of the best Curry dishes I've had.
-Wish the portion could have been bigger
4 out of 5

Great experience. Very exciting to come here. First time visit at this new location. The old location was a lunch spot I frequented when working downtown St Paul. Love the steel water cups. Loved the Thai Tea. Wontons had a slight unique spice which was good. My signature Pad Thai was awesome as I remember from about 20 years ago. Peanuts served on the side of the entree which was nice. The stir-fried rice had a sweet flavor I’ve never experienced before, but of course, it was tasty. Looking forward to coming back with more people. Again, clean, friendly.
